What Todacitan is and what it is used for

Todacitan helps to stop smoking and to relieve the anxiety that occurs when you stop smoking. The goal of Todacitan treatment is the permanent cessation of smoking.

The use of Todacitan allows a gradual reduction of nicotine dependence by relieving withdrawal symptoms.

What you need to know before you use Todacitan

Do not use Todacitan:

  • if you are allergic to cytisine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
  • if you suffer from unstable angina,
  • if you have a history of recent myocardial infarction,
  • if you suffer from clinically relevant cardiac arrhythmias,
  • if you have recently had a stroke,
  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Todacitan.

Todacitan should be used with caution in ischemic heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor), atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and other peripheral vascular diseases, gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism ( overactive thyroid), diabetes, schizophrenia, kidney and liver failure.

Todacitan should only be taken by people who have a firm intention to quit smoking. The use of Todacitan without stopping smoking could cause the side effects of nicotine to worsen.

Children and adolescents

Due to limited experience, the medicine is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age.

Elderly population

Due to limited clinical experience, Todacitan is not recommended for use in patients over 65 years of age.

Patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency

There is no clinical experience with Todacitan in patients with renal or hepatic impairment; therefore, the drug is not recommended for use in such patients.

Other medicines and Todacitan

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Do not take Todacitan together with antituberculous medicines.

In some cases, as a consequence of smoking cessation (with or without Todacitan), the dose of other medicinal products may need to be adjusted. This adjustment is particularly important if you use other medicines containing theophylline (for the treatment of asthma), tacrine (for Alzheimer's disease), clozapine (for schizophrenia) or ropinirole (for the treatment of Parkinson's disease). If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

It is currently unknown whether Todacitan can reduce the efficacy of systemic hormonal contraceptives. If you use systemic hormonal contraceptives, you should add a second barrier method (e.g., condoms).

Pregnancy and lactation

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

If you are a woman of childbearing potential, you must use effective contraception. Ask your doctor for advice.

Todacitan is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Driving and using machines

Todacitan has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Smoking cessation

The effects of changes in the body as a result of smoking cessation (with or without treatment with Todacitan) may alter the mechanism of action of other medications. Therefore, in some cases a dose adjustment may be necessary.

In some people, quitting smoking, with or without treatment, has been associated with an increased risk of experiencing changes in thinking or behavior, with feelings of depression and anxiety (including rarely suicidal ideation and suicide attempt) and may be related to worsening of the psychiatric disorder. If you have a history of a psychiatric disorder, you should discuss this with your doctor.
