To reduce the amount of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in an active ulcer, use this medicine from Sopharma. Famotidine is used in gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis and gastroduodenitis, reflux esophagitis and pathological hypersecretion.

Available in a pack of 30 tablets.


 Active substance:
 famotidine 20 mg
Other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, magnesium stearate, sodium starch gluconate (type A), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, Opadry YS-IR-7002.


In active peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum:

  • 20 mg twice a day. morning and evening before bedtime or 40 mg once in the hours before bedtime for 4-8 weeks.

Maintenance treatment:

  • 20 mg at bedtime for up to a year.

Erosive gastritis and gastroduodenitis:

  • twice daily 20 mg in the morning and evening before bedtime or 40 mg once in the evening before bedtime, for 3-4 weeks.

Gastroesophageal reflux:

  • 20 mg in the morning and evening or 40 mg once in the evening for 10 -12 weeks.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (pathological hypersecretion):

  • 20 mg every 6 hours. At the discretion of the doctor – up to 160 td every 6 hours.

In patients with renal insufficiency:

  • the  daily dose is 20 mg or the interval between doses is increased to 36 – 48 hours.

In patients with impaired hepatic function:

  • the  daily dose is reduced or the interval between doses is extended.

Not used in children under 12 years of age due to a lack of data on safety efficacy.

No dosage adjustment is required in elderly patients.

Famotidine Sopharma tablets should be swallowed whole with some water.

More Information

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. No interaction studies have been performed with other medicinal products. To date, no interactions have been reported with other medicinal products.

If you accidentally take a double or triple dose of the medicine at one time (for example 4-12 chewable tablets), this should not lead to any side effects. In this case, continue taking as directed. In case of significant drug overdose, adverse reactions may be exacerbated (see section 4. Adverse reactions). In this case, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding, fertility:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

Famotidine Sopharma is not used during pregnancy and lactation.

Driving and using machines:

No special instructions required.

Possible side effects:

Like all medicines, Famotidine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Famotidine is well tolerated.

  • The following side effects are rare: headache, dizziness, diarrhea or constipation.
  • Very rare:
    • general disorders – loss of appetite, fatigue, fever;
    • heart disorders – arrhythmia, palpitations;
    • gastrointestinal disorders – nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, dry mouth, changes in liver enzymes;
    • disorders of the musculoskeletal system – muscle cramps, joint pain;
    • disorders of the nervous system – dizziness, confusion, insomnia, drowsiness;
    • skin disorders – itching, rash, dry skin;
